Red Is Everything This Winter—But Which Red Is Right For You?

What does NARS Turkish Delight, MAC Ruby Woo, and Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk all have in common? They all dictated the lip color trends at one point or another. Back in the 2000s and 2010s, there was a certain status symbol tied to these lippies, and you’d want to be seen reapplying these formulas in the bathroom of chic clubs and lounges. The glaring problem with which no one wanted to come to terms, though? It’s that these colors only worked for a handful of people, leaving the rest of us with washed-out complexions.

There’s something interesting happening on TikTok these days—whereas past makeup trends told people the exact colors and products to wear, trends like seasonal color analysis and perfect lip combos are making people choose the best products for themselves. Sure, there are still viral products that are still selling out, and there may still be popular colors—but, for the most part, people are choosing the colors that work best for their undertones.

Of course, the most divisive lip color is red, as you can go for a bright or dark red, cool or warm red—the list goes on. In light of red’s chokehold on today’s fashion girlies, we wanted to break down which red will look best for your seasonal color analysis—and that extends past lipstick to accessories, clothing, and more.

Understanding Your Color Palette

There are a few color analysis types circulating TikTok, but we’re going to focus in on the four-season color analysis, developed by psychologist and author of Color Me Beautiful, Carole Jackson. Jackson split the four seasons into two main categories: warm undertones (which autumn and spring fall under), and cool undertones (where you can find winter and summer). To further categorize the undertones, Jackson split the warm and cool undertones based on the lightness or darkness of features like hair and eyes. It looks a little something like this:

Warm Undertones

Autumn = Dark eyes and dark hair (ex. Jennifer Lopez)Spring = Light eyes and light hair (ex. Blake Lively)

Cool Undertones

Winter = Dark eyes and dark hair (ex. Kylie Jenner)Summer = Light eyes and light hair (ex. Margaret Qualley)

Choosing the Best Red For You

After pinning down which season you fall under, you’ll want to go for colors that make you look lively. To help you out, here are some of the best reds for each season.

Winter

Winters will thrive in reds that have cool, blue undertones and that err on the darker side. You can choose a lighter color like oxblood or go bold with a deep burgundy.

Summer

You can definitely choose anything that winters are wearing for more dramatic looks, but for everyday, you’ll want to stick to brighter cool-toned reds like cool cherry or raspberry.

Vogal Opaque Tights in Granada

Spring

Coming in warm and bright, you need a red that’s equally as warm and shocking (in a good way, obvi). If anyone is pulling off red-orange or poppy, it’s you.

Deborah Lippman Nail Polish in Raining Men
The Bar Rose Neck Tie

Autumn

Like Springs, you’ll want to choose a red that has warm undertones. You can go a bit deeper, though, with a true firetruck red.
